In memory of Dr. Shen-su Sun 专页
In memory of Dr Shen-su Sun, my dear mentor A world-class scientist and tireless fighter, Dr Shen-su Sun has left us with regret, after battling against cancer for about 10 year with superb wisdom and iron determination. I was told Dr Sun had suffered a great deal when he passed away. He was in such great pain that he bit his tongue and his fingers. I know he did so because he did not want to leave us. He was concerned about so many things and so many people in this world.
Many geologists know that he had helped and instructed many people, especially young scholars from China. I remember the last time I called him. He talked to me over the phone for about half hour, ignoring the warnings from the nurse. He kept mentioning the work of several young researchers in the mainland, saying with smile, but not without regret: “I probably won’t be able to help them.” At that time, I thought: “Well, even Lei Feng, the role model for so many, would only be able to do as much as this.” I didn’t realize that was the last time I was able to hear his advice. Due to the side effects of medications, he lost his hearings soon after that.
Of the numerous researchers in geoscience, I am probably the one who has benefited most from his help. From 1999 to 2003, I was privileged to be able to work under his supervision, and to listen to his instructions, during my PhD studies at the Australian National University. Dr Zhengxiang Li of the University of WA said to me: Other people only had bits and pieces of Dr Sun’s advice and benefited for their lifetime. You must cherish your opportunity!
I started communication with Dr Sun in 1997, when he was visiting University of Science and Technology of China. I was selected as postgraduate representative to report to him our work and studies. After that we began our email communications. I remember my first email was written in Chinese. He replied, saying “Your Chinese is not bad… but we’d better communicate in English from now on so that you can practice your English writing. For more than a year after that, I had nearly a thousand email correspondences with him, totaling about four to five hundred pages altogether. During this period, he gave me comprehensive guidance, both academically and morally, from geochemistry to English composition, which enabled me to be aware of many recent advances in the field of geochemistry and know some useful ways to study. I later knew that many young scholars were like me in having the fortune of receiving advice from him.
Dr Sun was diagnostic with postage stomach cancer early 2000. He had been complaining about stomachache for five years before that. Unfortunately, until then he was diagnostic with muscle pain. According to the memory of the surgeon who did the operation to remove the cancer from Dr Sun’s stomach, his conditions were pretty bad at that the time of the operation, with signs of cancer cell diffusion. It was really a miracle that he was able to survive until now. For five years, he was tirelessly guiding many young scholars like me as he was suffering from the disease!
I was scheduled to do my midterm report for my PhD thesis in December 2000. Considering that he was doing chemotherapy at that time, I purposefully didn’t pass on my progress report to him until the evening before the seminar, thinking that he did not need to spend time reading and commenting on it because there would not be enough time. To my great surprise, I saw my report on the step in front of my door the following morning. It turned out that he spent the whole night carefully reading through and making detailed comments on the report. He didn’t finish it until early morning before he drove all the way to deliver it to my house!
Dr Sun was a great compatriot. From my personal observation, I can see he was deeply passionate about raising the standard of science and technology and the prosperity of China. His profound love towards the Chinese people is a driving force of his moral integrity. It became his routine to work round the clock. Most of the time he had scores of papers to read and comment on, papers written by young scholars. He often said to me, “It’s not a big deal for me to sleep a bit less.” Even when he was seriously ill, he was still thinking about reading papers for colleagues in the mainland and in Taiwan.
In 2002, shortly after he finished chemotherapy, he accepted an invitation to lecture at Peking University for three months, when he was still recovering. Professor Ai of Peking University wrote to me yesterday: “
“…Dr Sun lives a very simple life. Once he went to the campus barber shop to have a haircut. He just spent three yuan having his hair cut. He could have spent another three yuan having his hair washed, but he didn’t. Instead, he came back to his room to wash by himself. Yet he donated all his lecturing income of ten thousand yuan to assist 38 children from financially-disadvantaged families in the Dabie Mountain to go to school. (He later on donated another fifteen thousand yuan from his earning at the SHRIMP Centre.) At present, the children only know that they are supported by a scientist grandpa. May Dr Sun rest in peace…”
Dr Sun’s name, ‘su’, written in Chinese character with a metal radical and a meaning component ‘art, technique, method’, has two meanings: 1. long needle; 2. guidance. This character characterizes Dr Sun as a man. He is well-known as a sharp critic, who is relentless in criticizing wrong ideas. At the same time he is an outstanding teacher, earnestly and tirelessly guiding young students and researchers in their studies and research. He was very strict with them and at the same time quite tolerant. For this reason, he may have many ‘enemies’, but he has more friends.
Many friends are impressed by Dr Sun’s frank and straightforward personality, and his sincerity. Some said to me: (if you want to get along well with Dr Sun) you must first of all be able to stand blunt criticisms. There is hardly anyone else in the world like him who would point out his friend’s shortcomings in such a frank and sincere manner. He is a true friend who is hard to come by! Two of his essays, ‘Some Criticisms and Suggestions on the Research and Development in Geoscience in China’ (attachment 1), and ‘Some Criticisms and Suggestions on Geoscience in Taiwan (attachment 2) are embodiments of his personal integrity. Today, as we re-read these two articles, we are even more deeply moved.
They say ‘one is lucky to have a bosom friend in life’. They also say ‘it’s easy to find a friend, but hard to come across a true one.’ Aren’t we lucky to have Dr Sun as a true and selfless friend?
I remember when I first arrived in Australia, I was extremely excited, and my mind was overactive. For several weeks, I kept selling my ‘theory’ to Dr Sun about ….. and about the interaction of nuclear and …, which indeed took him by surprise. He realized that I definitely needed to be criticized. His thousand emails failed to rid me of my wishful thinking. For this reason, he wrote me a long email, suggesting that I reread his essays (see attachments 1 and 2). Later on he hand copied a note by Zhou Jianyun (attachment 3) ‘On Seeing Mr Xu Beihong off to Go to France to Study’, adding two footnotes (Note 3) and sent to me: “(1)困境之根:许多年青人因缺乏资讯,图书馆没有新的国际杂志,他们没有适当的人指导,只好凭感觉,靠才气,自己发展。
“(1) The root of dilemma: For lack of information and lack of adequate supervision, many young people had to make their own way with some intellectual talent and wishful thinking. They take imagination for solid knowledge. They go to international tournaments as if they were playing a game. Yet how could one have a thorough understanding of something without having the basic knowledge? How to make these people aware that they are going in the wrong direction and should turn back? (2) A talented person is not necessarily a talent. Xu Beihong is famous for his paintings of horses. Yet before he went overseas to study, his horse was indeed anything but a horse. After he arrived in France, he started from the very beginning, gradually and steadily laying down a good foundation. Is it really that hard to reform oneself?” (Note 4)
His criticism was a stern warning to me. From then on I started to reform myself. Dr Sun’s has enjoyed a fine reputation at home and abroad. (Note 5). One thing he often mentioned was ‘real professional’. I asked him the difference between a professional player and an amateur. He said, “An amateur is always delighted at every bit of progress he makes, but a real professional is always finding his own weakness, and constantly trying to improve.’ Throughout his life, Dr Sun was always in relentless pursuit of perfection and truth.
A Chinese saying goes, ‘A man will not shed his tears easily.’ However, each time I think of Dr Sun, my eyes are filled with tears. A just want to say to Dr Sun: Rest in peace, Sir. I promise we will carry on your legacy.’
1. Dr Sun always corrected my English each time he wrote to me.
2. A mid-term report is a confirmation of PhD candidature in Australia, which is generally to be submitted 18 months after enrolment in a PhD program.
3. I arrived in Australia on 1 August, 1999. Dr Sun presented the Note to me on 17 September. I processed the Note and Dr Sun’s comments onto the computer at the end of 2002. Dr Sun then posted it to the website Wuliucun. I
4. My wife asked Dr Sun if he was using the two comments to criticise me. He said: No, not entirely. But I was a typical example.
5. According to my incomplete count from Web of Science, by early 2005 Dr Sun was cited about 10,000 times in SCI. Of these, Sun & McDonough 1989 was cited 2800 times, plus several other papers on lead isotope and trace element geochemistry which were cited between 500 to 800 times. It is worth pointing out that Dr Sun often refused to sign as coauthor even though he put a huge amount of time and effort working with others. Weidong Sun
